4/30/2018 3 Comments So What? Blog My book " Salt to the Sea " is about 4 people, Florian, Joana, Emilia, and Alfred. All of them have different backgrounds and are all unwanted by Hitler and his Nazi Regime. They meet unexpectedly and help each other out along the way to what they hope is freedom. They board a ship known as the " Wilhelm Gustloff " that later sinks killing 2 of the people, Alfred and Emilia. Before reading this book, I had no idea that there was ever a ship called the "Wilhelm Gustloff ". This ship was torpedoed while transferring immigrants and 10,000 people aboard died. That is more casualties than in the sinking of the Titanic and the Lusitania combined. The book begins to wind down with Florian and Joana getting married and living a long and happy life together, yet never forgetting where they came from and who they lost along the way. But there is a twist! The last chapter is of Florian, later in life, receiving a letter from a woman who ended up finding their old friend Emilia's body. The woman found Emilia's body washed up on the beach in a raft one evening after the ship sunk. Many years later she saw a picture linking Florian, Joana and Emilia together. The book finally ends with Florian reading the letter he received from the lady. " Salt to the Sea " proves just how hard it was back then during the war to live in Europe and not be accepted. After reading this book, I have a better understanding for how people felt, what they saw and what they went through. On page 133 in the perspective of the character Florian, it says the little boy buried his head against Poet's leg. "Make it stop! Please, no more." This line spoke to me because it is saying here is what we all go through whether or not we are the young, the old, the strong and/or the weak. We have all stared death right in the eye and no longer want to witness or feel this pain anymore. I hope that our generation will never have to suffer or live through such a horrible time as Florian, Joana, Emilia and Alfred did. So what you ask? So what if a ship was sunk in 1945 and 10,000 immigrants died trying to flee war torn countries for a better life? While reading this book, I have realized how things that occurred back then could easily happen again. If everyone knew a little more about this topic and what truly happened, then maybe we can prevent another World War and another genocide. Without this knowledge and remembrance, history could repeat itself.

It seems cool how you can see all the POVs of the characters and what they were thinking

This sounds like a great book! I think it is very interesting and sad that this ship that sunk isn’t well known, especially since it killed so many people!

I like that they added a real life event to the book to help give a more inside veiw. And I agree that without knowing this stuff another world war could happen.

Community Issue A 34-year-old man from Perquimans County had more than 4 pounds of cocaine with him when Wake County sheriff's deputies stopped his car Last September in Knightdale. Charges accused Bailey of trafficking in cocaine by possession and by transportation, felony fleeing to elude arrest and the assault. Cocaine is illegal in North Carolina but that Law seems to be stopping know one. Thousands of people do drugs in NC some including heroine and cocaine. Children and teens dying from overdoses or drug uses that their bodies just cant handle. As more of these drug stories come out, the more children and young adults will see it. Either setting a red alarm off in their heads to watch out and never do it or saying an all in to inform you on more drugs to take. Either way drugs are intoxicating our youth as well as even killing them. I believe we need to start paying more attention to this matter and stop it before it gets worse and more people start either getting in trouble or dying.
