4/30/2018 3 Comments So What? Blog My book " Salt to the Sea " is about 4 people, Florian, Joana, Emilia, and Alfred. All of them have different backgrounds and are all unwanted by Hitler and his Nazi Regime. They meet unexpectedly and help each other out along the way to what they hope is freedom. They board a ship known as the " Wilhelm Gustloff " that later sinks killing 2 of the people, Alfred and Emilia. Before reading this book, I had no idea that there was ever a ship called the "Wilhelm Gustloff ". This ship was torpedoed while transferring immigrants and 10,000 people aboard died. That is more casualties than in the sinking of the Titanic and the Lusitania combined. The book begins to wind down with Florian and Joana getting married and living a long and happy life together, yet never forgetting where they came from and who they lost along the way. But there is a twist! The last chapter is of Florian, later in life, receiving a letter from a woman who ended up finding their old friend Emilia's body. The woman found Emilia's body washed up on the beach in a raft one evening after the ship sunk. Many years later she saw a picture linking Florian, Joana and Emilia together. The book finally ends with Florian reading the letter he received from the lady. " Salt to the Sea " proves just how hard it was back then during the war to live in Europe and not be accepted. After reading this book, I have a better understanding for how people felt, what they saw and what they went through. On page 133 in the perspective of the character Florian, it says the little boy buried his head against Poet's leg. "Make it stop! Please, no more." This line spoke to me because it is saying here is what we all go through whether or not we are the young, the old, the strong and/or the weak. We have all stared death right in the eye and no longer want to witness or feel this pain anymore. I hope that our generation will never have to suffer or live through such a horrible time as Florian, Joana, Emilia and Alfred did. So what you ask? So what if a ship was sunk in 1945 and 10,000 immigrants died trying to flee war torn countries for a better life? While reading this book, I have realized how things that occurred back then could easily happen again. If everyone knew a little more about this topic and what truly happened, then maybe we can prevent another World War and another genocide. Without this knowledge and remembrance, history could repeat itself.

My book is called "Salt to the Sea" by Ruta Sepety and takes place during World War 2. Germany's leader, Adolf Hitler, believed that Germans were the superior race and that everyone else was worthless, including Jewish People. Hitler disliked Jews so much that he tried to exterminate the world of them. He sent them to Internment camps and tortured them. It got so out of hand that they started putting Jewish people in gas Chambers and killing them. Gas is now being used by the Syrian government to kill innocent civilians in their own country. Like Hitler the government is trying to get rid of or exterminate a certain group of innocent people. These were/ are both genocides with the same purpose.
r My book "Salt to the Sea" written by Ruta Sepetys takes place in the time of World war 2 when Germany is head tot head with the Soviet Union ( Russia ) and Germany is starting to lose. During this time, many people were immigrating to safer countries. There are 4 perspectives in this book but even though they have their own backgrounds and secrets, they are all going through the same travelling obstacles as well as going to the same destination. In real life during WW2 over 90,000 people of all races and backgrounds left Germany and surrounding countries to get out of the war areas and craziness. The 4 perspectives of the book are Florian, a teenage boy from Eastern Prussia who was an apprentice to a Nazi leader, Joana, a teenage girl who served as a nurse to a big time Germany surgeon, Emilia, a polish girl who is 15 and was sent away by her father to keep her safe, and finally Alfred, a nosy sailor aboard the ship known as the Wilhelm Gustloff ( one of the ships that carried immigrants including Florian, Joana and Emilia ). All of the characters described had an opinion on what was going on in their countries and the world. Florian felt that what the Nazi party was doing was wrong and was trying to escape its clutches as well as trying to find his younger sister who had been sent away to keep her safe.. Joana was trying to escape the Nazi party as well but for other reasons which were to find her mom and maybe others of her family. Emilia was trying to escape the clutches of both Hitler and Stalin who wanted nothing to do with Polish people. Alfred was what you would call an ideal German. he worshiped Hitler and the rest of the Nazi party to the highest. there was many people like Florian, Joana, and Emilia who wanted just to find safety and family but then there were loyal Germans like Alfred who thought that whatever the Nazis said was right and nothing else was. Near the end of the book all of the characters unite on a ship known as the Wilhelm Gustloff, named after a Nazi party member who had died. This boat indeed was an actual boat that once sailed as a Nazi party cruise ship but was later altered to be an immigration ship.
2/1/2018 0 Comments COMMUNITY SERVICE- MENTORINGThe Introduction: Our group is focusing on mentoring programs and issues within our community. Many mentoring programs have consistent problems such as insufficient funding, poor to no plans, the mentees not learning what they need to because the mentors are either not teaching them or don’t want to, and more. “Most programs that do have decent planning processes take about 80% of their time in planning and about 20% of time in implementation,” according to insala.com’s article on how to prevent seven common mentoring issues. We are interested in this issue because we want to help out the students in need of proper mentoring. Other people should care about this issue because if we want our nation to progress, we need our youth to be educated and to know how to get by in life so they can be the change the planet might need in the future. The Issue: Many children in NC and Wake County struggle with alcoholic parents or siblings that interfere with drugs leaving them with no good or even decent role model. This can corrupt their life forever. Causing them to follow in the footsteps of their intoxicated parents or unreliable siblings. This could also get them in deep trouble or hurt them. “Students who meet regularly with their mentors are 52% less likely than their peers to skip a day of school and 37% less likely to skip a class.” In addition to better school attendance and a better chance of going on to higher education, mentored youth maintain better attitudes toward school. The Solution: There are many issues/problems in the process of mentoring. For example, theres the situations where mentees don’t learn what they are supposed to because the mentors are not communicating or showing interest. Because of this, much mentors and mentees don’t get much time to bond or connect. Solutions to these issues may be starting off with getting to know your mentor/mentee and see what they like. Then, from there on, while you are working, you can use those interests in everyday situations and make learning more fun. Simple solutions to these problems can help children adapt to situations in life and it will make their school careers better. Anyone can mentor anyone, but they have to have an interest in it to make for a better experience. The Conclusion: Our concluding statement is that we want to help educationally troubled kids get past their problems and to grow and learn in the ways that they should be. We want to help these kids who don’t know what they should, like math, science, history, etc. We want to assist them with the problems they may have. That’s why we’re looking out to mentoring programs who need volunteers helping out. Our plan is to help the programs that need assistance with children who aren’t picking up topics as well as others. Action Plan:
-Time -GuideLine Responsible: To be a responsible mentor you have to be an active listener: -Focus on what the mentees are saying so you can summarize what was they said, In a way that they would understand Be a cheerleader: -Give support to your mentee -Give comments to help your mentee and reinforce to his/her answer -Celebrate the success of your mentee Be a great supporter: -Remember your mentee is a human too so try to know him as an individual and respect him/her as a friend -Act as an recording on there phone hear every word they say so you can give them a perspective of what they could answer -Be a Good Role Model: -teach your mentee what's good and bad -Do not let confidence go to waste -do not be scared to accept you own ignorance Sources: -“Mentoring” youth.gov. Community Issue A 34-year-old man from Perquimans County had more than 4 pounds of cocaine with him when Wake County sheriff's deputies stopped his car Last September in Knightdale. Charges accused Bailey of trafficking in cocaine by possession and by transportation, felony fleeing to elude arrest and the assault. Cocaine is illegal in North Carolina but that Law seems to be stopping know one. Thousands of people do drugs in NC some including heroine and cocaine. Children and teens dying from overdoses or drug uses that their bodies just cant handle. As more of these drug stories come out, the more children and young adults will see it. Either setting a red alarm off in their heads to watch out and never do it or saying an all in to inform you on more drugs to take. Either way drugs are intoxicating our youth as well as even killing them. I believe we need to start paying more attention to this matter and stop it before it gets worse and more people start either getting in trouble or dying.
